Where is the best place to purchase void former, its a great question, and it comes down to two options;
Buy direct or through a distributor?
Well, that’s a great question and certainly worth exploring…
First, let’s clarify cardboard void former. A collapsible cardboard void former is used under structures where highly reactive subsoils are anticipated.
There are two main types: a large, honeycombed sheet or a smaller box type void former. For more info on the differences, check out our Void Former - Cardboard or Polystyrene blog
In this article, we’ll be discussing the larger, more common, honeycombed void former.
In Australia, there are currently only two manufacturers of this type of void former—Lite Corp in NSW and Sonoco in QLD. Lite Corp produces a 2400mm x 1200mm sheet, whereas Sonoco produces an 800mm x 2400mm. The sheet size does not affect the performance of the product, only the installation.
That said, a narrower or custom-sized sheet may be an advantage with some ground slab designs.
Now, back to the big question – should I buy directly or through a distributor?
Let’s look at the manufacturer first…
Manufacturers have multimillion-dollar machines and facilities to ensure a quality and consistent product. These machines need to run as much as possible to make a viable return on investment.
They’re brilliant at manufacturing, so where do distributors come in?
Distributors, as the name suggests, are great at distributing. Their investments are not in machinery but in systems and delivery networks.
They’re not concerned about keeping machines running, and their main aim is to ensure their customers get what they want, where and when they need it.
Given their experience in distribution and logistics, they’re more agile and able to respond to complex site conditions, difficult site access and inevitable rain delay on site.
But what about that small matter of price? Isn’t it cheaper to buy direct from the manufacturer?
That may be the case with some products but not with void former because of one of the major costs associated with void former ….. transport.
Due to the bulky nature of void former, freight can account for up to 40% of the overall cost of the product.
Given that the distributor's main occupation is distributing products, they can afford to be creative with their distribution options and make the most of their greater network of carriers.
So, if you’ve got a project with collapsible cardboard void former, remember, manufacturers are great at manufacturing, and distributors are great at distributing.
